Sky Dancer by Gill Lewis (Upper KS2)
If you’ve not yet read any Gill Lewis you have a treat in store. Sky Dancer takes you to the Yorkshire grouse moors and sweeps you along in a fast moving sequence of events aimed at highlighting the misunderstood destruction of the blanket bogs, home of the struggling hen harrier.
The story unfolds in the home of a gamekeeper’s family, struggling to come to terms with the loss of their father. The youngest son, Joe and their new neighbour, a townie from Bristol, cannot accept the blatant lawbreaking which goes on to keep the moor clear of the predatory hen harriers and so involve themselves in an undercover attempt to rear a harrier orphaned by Joe’s brother. With the help of unlikely accomplice, local landowner’s daughter Minty Knight, the teenagers take on her wealthy grouse moor owning father and all that he stands for.
